Janeway’s holographic love interest becomes more than just a way to pass the time.
With a neutronic wavefront approaching carrying dangerous levels of radiation, Voyager must batten down the hatches. By generating an inverse warp field, the ship can “anchor” and ride out the storm. While they wait, Janeway agrees to keep one of the hologrids open round-the- clock. It is Tom’s authentic re-creation of the Irish village Fair Haven, complete with a bar in which to unwind and fraternize with the locals.
Janeway finds herself intrigued by the bar owner, Michael Sullivan, and spends the evening in the hologrid making his acquaintance. After the wavefront makes its first impact with Voyager, causing turbulence and some minor damage, Janeway decides to return to Fair Haven. This time, however, she makes some changes to Michael’s subroutines. After reprogramming his education level, personality and physical characteristics to her specifications, she makes one more change—deleting his wife from the program.
Soon, Janeway finds herself immersed in the Fair Haven hologram. She and Michael take long walks, talk of poetry and literature, and dance Irish jigs in the bar. Meanwhile, Voyager’s sensors pick up a slight increase in the wavefront’s neutronic gradient. Janeway orders new shield modulations before returning to the holodeck, where she and Michael share their first passionate kiss.
Later in the pub, Janeway is nowhere to be found. However, Tom finds Michael brooding in the corner, drinking away his sorrows. Brokenhearted over Janeway’s sudden disappearance, he starts a brawl. When the Doctor confronts her about the hologram’s behavior, the Captain confesses that she has fallen in love. Although she is embarrassed to admit her feelings for a hologram, the Doctor convinces her that her emotions are real, even if the person is not. He urges her, however, to savor their differences and resist modifying his program any further.
With the wavefront’s gradience rising at an alarming rate, Voyager’s warp field begins to de-stabilize. Chakotay recommends cutting a path through to the perimeter using the ship’s deflector beam, but this will require routing all available power. With no time to lose, Janeway orders all power cut, including the holodecks. They make it through the storm safely, but Fair Haven has suffered from photonic decay. It will take several weeks, but Tom plans to restore what he can, and Janeway chooses to save Michael’s program. However, she makes one more modification—denying herself any further access to his behavioral subroutines.
